Laptop charging port repair in Leeds

A charging port takes more punishment than any other part of a laptop: the plug goes in and out thousands of times, the cable gets tugged, the laptop gets lifted with the charger still attached. When it fails, the symptoms look exactly like a dead battery or a dead charger, which is why we prove which of the three it is before anything is replaced. Some ports sit on a small board of their own and come out as a unit; others are soldered to the mainboard, which is slower and more delicate work, and we do both ourselves.

Does this sound like yours?

The faults we see most

Not on the list? Book a repair anyway and describe it. Describing it to us in a message is free either way.

What we do

Name the fault, then the fix, then the price

  1. We test the charger first, on your laptop and on ours, because a worn charger or a cable broken inside its sleeve is the commonest cause of a laptop that will not charge, and it is the cheapest

  2. We look inside the port with a torch. Lint, grit and a bent pin are all things we can see, and a port packed with debris is cleaned, not replaced

  3. We check the battery is not the fault wearing a port's disguise: a battery that will not take a charge looks the same from the outside, and the battery's own report tells us

  4. We test for power reaching the board, because a port that is physically fine on a board that is not passing power is a different repair, and we say which before anyone orders a part

  5. We identify how your port is made. On many laptops it sits on a small board of its own and comes out as a unit; on others it is soldered to the mainboard. The first is a straightforward swap, the second is careful bench work

  6. Soldered ports we replace ourselves, with the old one removed cleanly and the new one fitted and tested, which is work most repairers send away or decline

  7. On a USB-C machine we check whether the port is charging only or also carries data and video, and fit a part that matches, because a port that charges but drops the screen is not a repair

  8. We test with your charger and ours afterwards, at the angles that used to fail, and we check the battery is charging to full

  9. You get one fixed quote before any work starts, and if the honest answer is that the port has taken the board with it, we tell you that and what the options are

How long it takes

An honest answer, not a booking slot

A port on its own small board is usually a single sitting once the part is in hand. A soldered port is bench work: the laptop comes with us or is collected, the board is worked on with proper equipment, and the machine comes back tested. We tell you which kind yours is, and how quickly the right part can reach us, before anything is agreed.

What it costs

A free first opinion by message, a £50 call-out agreed first, then a fixed price

Telling us the fault in a message gets you a first opinion, free, and it is worth doing first: some faults we can sort over a remote link without anybody travelling. Before anyone travels we tell you what the repair is likely to cost: a fixed price where the fault and the model make it clear, or an honest estimate where we need to see the machine. A visit has a £50 call-out, the same wherever we come out to, agreed before we travel. It is the first £50 of your job, not an extra on top: if you go ahead, it is part of the price you pay, and if you do not, it is all you pay, because it covers the journey and the time spent finding the fault. We do not publish a price list beyond the call-out, because the same fault costs different money on different machines. You get one fixed quote, agreed in writing, before any work starts. If, once we have seen the machine, the fixed price is higher than our estimate, or the fault is not the one we priced, we tell you why before doing anything, and you can say no and pay only the call-out. If we cannot fix the fault we quoted for, you pay nothing for the repair. No fix, no fee covers the repair itself, not the call-out, a priority fee, a separate fault or a part that works as it should.

Questions

The things people ask

Can you come today?

Ask for it. When you book a repair, choose priority, the next day or the same day, for a visit or a remote session. A priority visit or session depends on a technician being free. If we can do it, we tell you the priority fee with the call-out or the session price before anything is booked, and same day costs more than next day. If we cannot, it is a standard booking and there is no priority fee. Nothing is booked until you have agreed the fee. If we confirm a priority visit or session and then cannot make that day, we tell you as soon as we know, it becomes a standard booking, and there is no priority fee. For a visit, the priority fee is payable once we have come out, and for a remote session, once the session starts. We are open day and night, Sunday to Friday, and closed Saturdays.

How do I know whether it is the charger or the port?

Try a known-good charger for the same laptop, or try your charger on another machine it fits. If a different charger works, yours was the fault, and that is the cheapest possible outcome. If every charger behaves the same way, and especially if the plug only works at an angle or when held, the port is the suspect. If no charger does anything at all and the laptop will not run even on mains, the fault may be on the board, and that is what we test for before anything is replaced.

Can a soldered charging port really be replaced, or do I need a new laptop?

It can, and it is work we do ourselves rather than send away. The old port is removed from the board cleanly, the pads are prepared, the new port is fitted and tested. It is more delicate than swapping a port on its own board, and it is still a fraction of the cost of a new machine. The only time we say no is when the board itself has been damaged beyond the port, and we tell you that after testing, not before.

My laptop charges fine with the cable held at an angle. Can I just live with it?

You can for a while, but it gets worse, and the way it gets worse matters. A loose port arcs and heats as the connection makes and breaks, which can damage the board around it, and a laptop that suddenly stops charging altogether usually gave this warning first. A port replaced while it is only loose is a smaller job than one replaced after it has taken the board with it.

Is it safe to clean the port myself?

With the laptop off, a torch and a wooden or plastic pick, gently, yes. Lint compacts at the bottom of a port and stops the plug seating; it comes out in flakes. Do not use anything metal, which can short or bend the pins, and do not use liquid. If something is bent rather than blocked, stop; straightening a pin is a job for the bench.

Will I lose my files?

No. A port repair does not touch the storage, and the laptop comes back as it was. If the machine has to come to the bench, it is logged, labelled and kept with your files untouched, as every device in our care is.

How much does a charging port repair cost?

For a charging port, what decides the price is how the port is made: a part on its own small board is a swap, a port soldered to the mainboard is bench work. It depends on the fault and your exact model, so there is no price list. A first opinion is free, by message, and before anyone travels we tell you what the repair is likely to cost: a fixed price where the fault and the model make it clear, or an honest estimate where we need to see the machine. A visit has a £50 call-out, the same wherever we come out to, agreed before we travel. It is the first £50 of your job, not an extra on top: if you go ahead, it is part of the price you pay, and if you do not, it is all you pay, because it covers the journey and the time spent finding the fault. No Fix, No Fee covers the repair, not the call-out.

Is your work guaranteed after the repair?

Yes. We stand behind the repairs we carry out. If the same fault we fixed returns as a result of our work, get in touch and we will put it right at no charge. Inside 90 days we do that without argument. Past 90 days we will still look at it on its merits, because a reasonable period for a fitted screen and a reasonable period for a fifteen-year-old desktop are not the same thing. This sits on top of your statutory rights, not instead of them, and those last longer. It does not cover new or unrelated faults, new accidental or liquid damage after our repair, or problems caused by other work carried out after ours.
