Laptop screen replacement in Leeds

- It went over, or something closed on it, and now there is a spider crack with black ink spreading out of it
- The picture is fine in one half and a solid black or white block in the other
- Coloured or grey lines run down or across the screen, and they move when you open and close the lid

What we do
Name the fault, then the fix, then the price
- We ask what happened first, because a drop, a slow fade, and a screen that never worked from cold are three different faults with three different answers
- We put your laptop on an external screen. If the picture on the monitor is perfect, the graphics side of the machine is fine and the fault is in the lid, which is good news and narrows the job considerably
- We check for backlight before we condemn a panel. A display with a faint image behind the black is lit wrongly rather than broken, and that is not always a new screen
- We open and close the lid while it is running and watch what the picture does, because a flicker or lines that change with the hinge angle usually mean a chafed display cable, not a failed panel
- We look hard at the hinges. A hinge that has stiffened and started tearing out of its mounts is what cracks a screen with nobody having dropped it, and fitting a new panel while leaving that hinge alone simply breaks the new panel too
- We match the panel to your exact model: the size, the connector, the resolution, the refresh rate, the finish, and whether it is a touchscreen. Two laptops with the same name on the lid can take different panels, so we go by what is inside yours, not by what the badge says
- We tell you honestly whether it is worth doing, and that conversation is free. On an older or low-value machine the panel can be worth more than the laptop, and we would rather lose the job than take your money for a bad decision
- You get one fixed quote before we order anything, so you decide with the real figure in front of you

How long it takes
An honest answer, not a booking slot
The fitting itself is the quick part. On a normal clamshell laptop the panel comes out from the front, and once we have the right one in hand it is usually done in a single sitting while you get on with something else. What sets the timescale is the part. A panel for a common Windows laptop is generally in hand within a few days. A high resolution, OLED, high refresh, touchscreen or 2 in 1 panel can take longer to source, and we will tell you the honest wait before you commit rather than after. Hinge damage adds time, because the mounts have to be made good or the new screen is on borrowed time. MacBooks and other machines with the display bonded into the lid are slower again, and we will explain what yours involves when we quote.

We do not publish a price list, because a price list for this work would be a fiction: the same fault costs different money on different machines. What we can do is tell you what moves the number, then give you one fixed quote before any work starts. If we cannot fix it, there is nothing to pay.
What drives the price
- The panel itself, which is nearly all of the cost, and which varies enormously between models that look almost identical from the outside
- The specification of that panel: resolution, refresh rate, brightness, colour, matte or glossy, and whether it is a touchscreen, since every one of those pushes the part price up
- Whether your laptop takes a bare panel that unclips from the front, or a whole bonded lid assembly, because those are two completely different jobs and two completely different parts
- Whether the hinges and the lid frame have been damaged too, which is common on drops and on any laptop that has been picked up by its screen
- Whether the display cable has been chafed or pulled, which is a cheap part but only if we spot it rather than replace a perfectly good panel around it
- How old and how sought after the model is, since panels for current machines are easy to get and panels for old or unusual ones are not

The things people ask
My laptop screen is black but I can hear it running. Is the screen broken?
Not necessarily, and this is worth checking before you spend anything. Plug the laptop into a monitor or a television. If a picture appears there, the computer itself is working and the fault lies in the lid: the panel, the display cable, or the backlight. If the external screen is black too, then the screen was never the problem and the fault is somewhere else in the machine. That one test costs nothing and it changes the whole job, which is why we do it before we quote you for anything.
The glass is cracked but the picture still works. Can you replace just the glass?
On most ordinary laptops there is no separate glass to replace. The screen is a single sealed panel, so the glass and the display come out and go back in as one unit. Touchscreens and 2 in 1 machines are the ones where a separate top layer does exist, and even then it is usually bonded to the panel underneath, so separating them tends to cost more in labour and risk than fitting a fresh panel. We will tell you which sort your laptop is, and we will not charge you for a repair that is not really available.
Is it worth replacing the screen, or should I just buy a new laptop?
That comes down to three things: what the panel costs for your specific model, whether the screen is the only fault, and what the machine is worth with a good screen in it. A recent laptop with decent specification and nothing else wrong with it is almost always worth repairing. An old, slow machine that already had a failing battery and a full drive is often not, and you will hear that from us plainly rather than discover it after you have paid. Working out which one you have got is free.
Why did my screen crack when I have not dropped it?
Look at the hinges. A hinge that has grown stiff will keep pulling on its mounting points until it tears them loose from the lid, and once those mounts have gone the lid twists every time you open it and the panel takes the strain. Sooner or later it cracks, usually starting from the corner. This is a real fault and not you being careless. It also matters for the repair, because if the hinge is left as it is, a brand new screen will break in exactly the same way. We fix the cause, not only the symptom.
How much does a laptop screen replacement cost in Leeds?
We do not print a figure, because the panel is most of the cost and panels are not interchangeable. Two machines from the same maker in the same year can take completely different screens at completely different prices. What we will do is find out exactly which panel yours takes, price it properly, and give you one fixed quote before anything is ordered or opened. If you decide not to go ahead, you owe us nothing for finding out.
Will I lose my files if you replace the screen?
No. A screen replacement is work on the lid, and your drive is not involved. Your files, your programs and your settings stay exactly where they are, and the machine comes back to you the way you left it. If we do find something else wrong while we have the laptop in front of us, we will tell you about it and let you decide, rather than quietly add it to the bill.
Do I have to bring the laptop somewhere, or do you come out?
We come to you, at home or at work, anywhere across Leeds and the surrounding areas. A cracked screen is the last thing you want to be carrying across town, and a laptop that is already damaged does not enjoy a trip in a bag.
