After your repair

A repair fixes the fault it was quoted for. It does not make the rest of the machine new. This is the other half: what is normal in the first week, what is worth a phone call, and the few habits that decide how long the machine lasts.

Write this down now

Two lines you will be glad of if you ever need to raise the same fault again.

  • Date of the repair: ......................................................
  • What was done: ..........................................................

Normal in the first week

  • A fan that sounds different after a clean and repaste, as long as it settles and the machine is not hot.
  • A new battery reading oddly for the first few charges, until the machine has learnt the new cell.
  • A busy machine after a drive swap, finishing updates and indexing in the background. It stops.
  • A replacement screen that is a shade brighter, cooler or warmer than the one that broke.

Ring us straight away if

  • It runs hotter than before, or the fan never stops.
  • You smell hot plastic or burning. Power it off first, ask afterwards.
  • The original fault comes back, even faintly, even once.
  • It shuts itself down on its own.
  • There are new noises inside: clicking, grinding or ticking. Stop using it now, not later.
  • Something looks unfinished: a flexing panel, a dead port, a key or trackpad behaving differently.

Nobody minds the call. A worry that turns out to be normal takes a minute to explain, and that is far better than living with a machine you have quietly stopped trusting.

Heat and dust

  • Keep laptops off beds, sofas, laps and carpet. Most breathe through the underside, and fabric seals the intake.
  • Leave a hand's width of air behind a desktop, a console and a television.
  • Do not shut a television or console in a closed cabinet. It breathes its own warm air back in.
  • Wipe the outside of the vents with a dry brush or cloth, or hold a vacuum nozzle near them rather than pressed against them.
  • Do not blast compressed air into a fan. It can spin past its rated speed and wreck the bearing, and it drives dust deeper in.
  • Do not prise panels, and never take the back off a television. The boards inside can hold a dangerous charge long after it is unplugged.

Battery and charger

  • Turn on the battery health or charge limit setting if the machine has one and lives on the charger.
  • Buy the manufacturer's charger or a reputable equivalent. Cheap unbranded chargers leave out the protection circuitry first, and a failure can take out the charging circuit on the board.
  • A bulging case, a lifting trackpad or a laptop that rocks on a flat desk means a swelling battery. Stop charging it, shut it down, do not press or puncture it, do not leave it under weight in a bag, and ring us.

Backups and updates

  • Keep the backup that was made for the repair, and keep it current. It turns the next fault into an inconvenience.
  • Leave updates turned on, and let them finish rather than postponing them for weeks.
  • Do not start a large update the night before you need the machine for something that matters.
  • Know where your drive recovery key is. It is normally tied to the account the machine was set up with.

If the same fault comes back

We stand behind the repairs we carry out. If the same fault we fixed returns as a result of our work, get in touch and we will put it right at no charge. Inside 90 days we do that without argument. Past 90 days we will still look at it on its merits, because a reasonable period for a fitted screen and a reasonable period for a fifteen-year-old desktop are not the same thing. That does not cover new or unrelated faults, accidental damage, liquid damage, or problems caused by other work carried out after ours. Nothing here affects your statutory rights. Ring, say it is the same fault, and give the date at the top of this sheet.
