How long it takes
An honest answer, not a booking slot
Desktops are the kindest machines to work on. The case opens, the parts are mostly standard, and a good number of these jobs are finished on the visit: a dust and cooling clean, a power supply, a memory stick, a drive swap. Where a part has to be ordered in for your model, it is usually days rather than weeks. Two things take longer and we will say so up front. A Windows rebuild is slow because copying your files back is slow, and it is not work to rush. An all-in-one has to be opened like a laptop, with the screen off before you can reach anything, so it takes a good deal more time than a tower.
What it costs
Free advice by message, a call-out quoted first, then a fixed price
Telling us the fault in a message costs nothing, and it is worth doing first: some faults we can sort over a remote link without anybody travelling. If it needs a visit there is a minimum call-out, quoted before we travel, and it comes off the price if you go ahead. We do not publish a price list beyond that, because a price list for this work would be a fiction: the same fault costs different money on different machines. What we can do is tell you what moves the number, then give you one fixed quote before any work starts. If we cannot fix the fault we quoted for, there is no repair fee.
What drives the price

- Which part has actually failed: a power supply, a fan or cooler, memory, a drive, a graphics card, or the motherboard
- Whether it is a tower or an all-in-one, because an all-in-one is far slower to open and put back together safely
- Whether the insides are standard desktop parts or something the maker built specifically for that model, which narrows what will fit and lifts the cost
- How long it has been left, since a machine that has been overheating and rebooting for months can take other parts down with it
- How much data has to be copied off and back on before it is safe to work
- Whether you want it put back exactly as it was, or you would rather we fit something better while the case is already open

The things people ask
My PC turns on but there is no picture. Is the whole thing dead?
Usually it is not. Fans spinning with a black screen is one of the most common desktop faults we see, and it points far more often at the display path or the memory than at a machine that is finished. It might be the cable or the wrong input on the monitor, it might be the graphics card, it might be a stick of memory that has worked loose or failed. It is not something to diagnose by guessing, which is why we test it properly rather than guess.
It keeps restarting on its own. What causes that?
Random restarts nearly always come from one of a few places: heat, the power supply, the memory, or something in software such as a driver. The pattern tells us a lot. A machine that only drops out when it is working hard is behaving differently from one that reboots while it sits there doing nothing. That is why we test it under load rather than take a quick look and tell you what you want to hear.
How much does it cost to repair a desktop in Leeds?
It depends entirely on what has failed and on what is inside your machine, so we do not publish a price list we would only have to break. Do I have to unplug everything and bring the tower to you?
No. That is exactly the part people dread, and it is why we come to you. We work at your desk, at home or at the office, so nothing gets unplugged, nothing gets carried across Leeds, and nothing gets knocked in the boot of a car. There is no walk-in shop and no need for you to move it: we work at the machine, or collect it and bring it back if it needs the bench.
Windows will not start. Have I lost everything?
Very often you have not. Windows failing to boot and your files being gone are two separate things, and the first does not mean the second. In most cases the files are sitting on the drive intact and the boot is what is broken. Our order of work is deliberate: get your data safe first, then repair the machine. If the drive itself is dying then we will tell you that honestly, because it changes what is possible and what it is worth.
Is an older desktop worth repairing, or should I buy a new one?
Towers age better than most machines, because the parts are standard and you can usually replace the one thing that has failed rather than the whole computer. That said, there is a point where the money stops making sense, and we will tell you when you have reached it. If we look at your PC and the honest answer is that you should not spend money on it, you will hear that from us plainly.
Is your work guaranteed after the repair?
Yes. We stand behind the repairs we carry out. If the same fault we fixed returns as a result of our work, get in touch and we will put it right at no charge. Inside 90 days we do that without argument. Past 90 days we will still look at it on its merits, because a reasonable period for a fitted screen and a reasonable period for a fifteen-year-old desktop are not the same thing. This sits on top of your statutory rights, not instead of them, and those last longer. It does not cover new or unrelated faults, accidental damage, liquid damage, or problems caused by other work carried out after ours.
