Laptop motherboard repair in Leeds

The mainboard is the part everything else plugs into, which makes it the part people fear most and the part most often blamed wrongly. A laptop with no sign of life is far more often a charger, a port, a battery or a stuck power state than a dead board, and we will not condemn a board until we have proved it. When it is the board, the honest options are few and we set them out plainly: a replacement board where one is available and the machine is worth it, a component-level repair by a specialist with your say-so, or the files off the drive and the money towards something newer.

The faults we see most

Not on the list? Book a repair anyway and describe it. Describing it to us in a message is free either way.

What we do

Name the fault, then the fix, then the price

  1. We rule out everything that is not the board first: the charger, the charging port, the battery and a stuck power state, in that order, because each of them produces a dead laptop and each is a smaller repair

  2. We test with the screen out of the equation: a laptop that runs but shows nothing is often a display fault, not a board, and an external monitor tells us in a minute

  3. We take the base off and look. A burnt component, a scorched shield, corrosion from an old spill or a cracked board are things a torch and a trained eye find without any other test

  4. We test the board's power stages where the fault is electrical, because knowing which stage has failed is what decides whether a repair is sensible

  5. We tell you what we found in plain words, with the photographs if it helps, and we tell you the honest options rather than the one that pays best

  6. Where a replacement board makes sense we source the correct board for your exact model, fit it, move your drive and memory across where they are separate parts, and test the machine fully

  7. Soldered charging and HDMI ports on the board we replace ourselves. A repair to a single chip or other component on the board goes to a specialist, only with your say-so, after we have told you who will do it and what it costs

  8. Whatever happens to the board, your files are a separate question: the drive is usually healthy, and we can get the files off it onto a new machine or a drive of yours

  9. You get one fixed quote before any work, and when the honest answer is that the machine is not worth a board, we say so, and you have lost nothing but the call-out you agreed to

How long it takes

An honest answer, not a booking slot

The diagnosis is the visit: the base off, the obvious checked, the power stages tested where needed. A replacement board depends on how quickly the right part can be found for your model, and the swap itself is bench work that we do in a sitting once it arrives. A specialist component repair is quoted by the specialist and takes as long as they say. Getting the files off the drive is usually the quickest part of any of it.

What it costs

A free first opinion by message, a £50 call-out agreed first, then a fixed price

Telling us the fault in a message gets you a first opinion, free, and it is worth doing first: some faults we can sort over a remote link without anybody travelling. Before anyone travels we tell you what the repair is likely to cost: a fixed price where the fault and the model make it clear, or an honest estimate where we need to see the machine. A visit has a £50 call-out, the same wherever we come out to, agreed before we travel. It is the first £50 of your job, not an extra on top: if you go ahead, it is part of the price you pay, and if you do not, it is all you pay, because it covers the journey and the time spent finding the fault. We do not publish a price list beyond the call-out, because the same fault costs different money on different machines. You get one fixed quote, agreed in writing, before any work starts. If, once we have seen the machine, the fixed price is higher than our estimate, or the fault is not the one we priced, we tell you why before doing anything, and you can say no and pay only the call-out. If we cannot fix the fault we quoted for, you pay nothing for the repair. No fix, no fee covers the repair itself, not the call-out, a priority fee, a separate fault or a part that works as it should.

Questions

The things people ask

Can you come today?

Ask for it. When you book a repair, choose priority, the next day or the same day, for a visit or a remote session. A priority visit or session depends on a technician being free. If we can do it, we tell you the priority fee with the call-out or the session price before anything is booked, and same day costs more than next day. If we cannot, it is a standard booking and there is no priority fee. Nothing is booked until you have agreed the fee. If we confirm a priority visit or session and then cannot make that day, we tell you as soon as we know, it becomes a standard booking, and there is no priority fee. For a visit, the priority fee is payable once we have come out, and for a remote session, once the session starts. We are open day and night, Sunday to Friday, and closed Saturdays.

My laptop shows no sign of life. Is the motherboard dead?

Usually not. A laptop with no light, no fan and no sound is far more often a charger, a charging port, a battery that will not pass power or a stuck power state than a dead board, and every one of those is a smaller repair. We work through them in that order before we say anything about the board, and we will not condemn a board we have not proved.

Can a laptop motherboard actually be repaired, or only replaced?

Both, depending on the fault. A damaged charging or HDMI port on the board we replace ourselves. A burnt or failed component elsewhere on the board is a repair to a single chip, which is specialist work: it goes to a specialist only with your say-so, after we have told you who will do it and what it costs. Where neither makes sense, the board is replaced, or the machine is retired with its files recovered.

Is it worth replacing a laptop motherboard?

Sometimes, and we tell you honestly when it is not. On most modern laptops the processor and the memory are soldered to the board, so the board is most of the computer, and a replacement board can cost close to what the machine is worth. On a newer or higher-end laptop it is often well worth it. On an older budget machine the honest comparison is against what the same money buys new, and we make that comparison with you rather than for you.

Will I lose my files if the motherboard is dead?

Not usually. The files live on the drive, and the drive is a separate part on most laptops, which is very often perfectly healthy. We take it out, read it on our own equipment and move your files to a new machine or a drive of yours, whatever happens to the board. The exception is a laptop where the storage is soldered to the board itself, which we tell you about before anything else.

What does a laptop that would not turn on actually look like inside?

Sometimes exactly what you would expect. A Lenovo IdeaPad we opened in September 2026 had a component beside the Wi-Fi card that had burnt, with the shielding foil scorched around it. The owner chose not to repair it, and that was the right call for them; the point of the visit was to know. The job is written up with the photographs on our real jobs page.

How much does a motherboard repair cost?

For a board, nothing is quoted until we have proved the board is the fault, because most laptops that look dead are not. It depends on the fault and your exact model, so there is no price list. A first opinion is free, by message, and before anyone travels we tell you what the repair is likely to cost: a fixed price where the fault and the model make it clear, or an honest estimate where we need to see the machine. A visit has a £50 call-out, the same wherever we come out to, agreed before we travel. It is the first £50 of your job, not an extra on top: if you go ahead, it is part of the price you pay, and if you do not, it is all you pay, because it covers the journey and the time spent finding the fault. You get one fixed quote, agreed in writing, before any work starts. If, once we have seen the machine, the fixed price is higher than our estimate, or the fault is not the one we priced, we tell you why before doing anything, and you can say no and pay only the call-out. Soldered charging and HDMI ports we replace ourselves. A repair to a single chip or other component on a circuit board, or a drive that needs a clean-room laboratory, goes to a specialist only with your say-so, once we have told you who will do it and what it costs.

Is your work guaranteed after the repair?

Yes. We stand behind the repairs we carry out. If the same fault we fixed returns as a result of our work, get in touch and we will put it right at no charge. Inside 90 days we do that without argument. Past 90 days we will still look at it on its merits, because a reasonable period for a fitted screen and a reasonable period for a fifteen-year-old desktop are not the same thing. This sits on top of your statutory rights, not instead of them, and those last longer. It does not cover new or unrelated faults, new accidental or liquid damage after our repair, or problems caused by other work carried out after ours.
